Two rules: get the size right for now (never 'to grow into'), and choose the lightest bike in that size your budget allows. Those two decisions matter more than everything else combined.
Size first
Sized by wheel: 12–14" for ages 2–5, 16" for 4–6, 20" for 5–8, 24" for 7–11, 26" for 10+. Feet flat on the floor on the saddle.
Lighter = ridden
A 7kg bike gets ridden; an 11kg bike gets pushed. Weight is the single biggest factor in whether a child enjoys riding.
