Around £300 is where most people actually buy a bike — and it's where the internet is least helpful. Every list is either a supermarket own-brand roundup or a "budget" article whose cheapest pick is £700.
Here's what £300 genuinely buys in the UK in 2026, what to avoid, and the specific bikes we'd put our name to — all in stock, all built and checked in our Shrewsbury workshop before dispatch.

The one hard rule at this price: avoid full suspension entirely. A sub-£300 full-susser spends your money on a heavy spring that will fail. Rigid or hardtail, no exceptions.

💡 Buy last season’s model. This is our entire business: an end-of-line bike that was £400 last year and is £295 now is a much better bike than a new £295 one. Only the colour and the year on the box changed.
💡 Get the size right before the model. A £200 bike that fits beats a £300 bike that doesn’t — see our frame size guide.
💡 Budget £40 for essentials. A decent lock, lights and a track pump. Under-inflated tyres are the number-one cause of punctures and of bikes feeling slow.
💡 Ignore the gear count. 21 speeds isn’t better than 8 — range and crisp shifting matter, and simpler is usually more reliable at this price.
What about electric bikes under £300?
There aren't any worth buying, and we'd rather say so. A credible e-bike needs a battery you can trust — the most expensive, most safety-critical part — and below £600 that's where corners get cut.
