Best Family Cycling Routes in Shropshire | Traffic-Free Rides
Everyone's first family bike ride goes the same way: you find a route online, it turns out to have a mile of B-road in the middle, and you spend the whole time with a hand on a child's shoulder wondering why you bothered.
Shropshire is genuinely good for family cycling if you know where to go. We're based in Shrewsbury and these are the rides we actually recommend to customers — with the awkward bits flagged, because that's the part most route guides leave out. Access, parking and surfaces do change, so double-check anything critical before a long drive.
Easy — first proper family rides
🦢 The Mere, Ellesmere
Best for: ages 4+ on a first ride away from the park · Surface: firm paths · Facilities: parking, cafés and a playground by the water
Flat, pretty and self-contained, with wildlife to spot and ice cream at the end — everything a confidence-building first ride needs, and short enough that nobody ends up carried.
🚤 Llangollen Canal towpath, from Ellesmere
Best for: any age that can pedal in a straight line · Surface: compacted towpath
Towpaths are the single best family cycling resource in the county: dead flat, no traffic, and — the real skill in family rides — you can turn round whenever the smallest rider has had enough. Watch the narrow bridge pinch-points and give way cheerfully to anglers.
🏛️ Attingham Park, near Shrewsbury
Best for: very young riders and balance bikes · Note: National Trust — check their current cycling arrangements and parking before you go
Gentle estate paths, deer to spot, and a café for the mid-ride bribe. Ideal balance-bike territory.
🚂 The Silkin Way, Telford
Best for: a longer easy ride with an interesting destination · Surface: surfaced former railway line
Old railway lines are the other great family resource — built for trains, so the gradients are gentle by definition. Pick a stretch, ride out, turn round at a café or playground.
Moderate — a bit more distance
🌊 Severn Way, Shrewsbury riverside
Best for: local families who want a ride from the doorstep
Lovely riverside riding through town — but be honest with yourself about the road crossings and busier shared sections at weekends. Early mornings are golden.
🌉 Ironbridge Gorge
Best for: older kids who'll enjoy the history as much as the ride
Spectacular, but not fully traffic-free — some sections mix with roads, so it suits confident riders rather than wobbling beginners.
Harder — older kids and confident riders
🌲 Mortimer Forest, near Ludlow
Bike needed: a hardtail mountain bike with decent tyres — not a road or hybrid bike
Forest tracks and waymarked trails for kids on 24" and 26" wheels who've outgrown towpaths. Pick the easier waymarked routes first.
⛰️ The Long Mynd
Let's be straight: this is a serious climb and a serious descent, not a family ride. Teenagers on proper mountain bikes with an appetite for suffering will love it. Everyone else should enjoy the view from the café in Carding Mill Valley.
Making family rides actually work
💡 Plan for the shortest rider, not the average. A six-year-old’s realistic range on a 16" bike is 3–5 miles with a stop. Plan 4 and finish happy.
💡 Out-and-back beats a loop. You can turn round at any point; a loop commits you at halfway.
💡 Put a café or playground at the turnaround. The single biggest factor in whether kids ask to go again.
💡 Check tyre pressures before you leave. Soft tyres are why bikes feel slow — and the main cause of punctures.
💡 Take a pump, spare tube and multi-tool. Nothing ends a ride faster than a puncture six miles from the car.
💡 Check the bike fits. A child on a too-big bike is nervous the whole way — our size guide covers it.
